Chapter 45: Aftermath

Hey, speaking of The Woman Question, it looks like Saudi Arabia may finally be giving an inch-- sort of-- in a few years-- with King Abdullah declaring that women will have right to vote and run for office in 2015.

Voting in Saudi Arabia isn't exactly an act of great power, but it is a tiny step in the right direction. Let's hope the slope of women's rights in Saudi is a slippery one. Next: Driving?

As for Chapter 45, it wasn't unheard of for someone to be killed during a public protest if the crowd got ugly. The incident here isn't based directly on any historical instance of dudes throwing stones at suffragists (that I know of) (unless you count the part in Ironweed where [SPOILER REDACTED; just read the book; it's awesome]) but it's still significantly more plausible than that time the Prime Minister took a leisurely jaunt out to Prince Edward Island in the dead of winter in Anne of Green Gables.

ETA: Oops, missed this. Woman Sentenced to Flogging for Driving. Saudi Arabian authorities, I really wish you would get a grip.

ETA2 Ok, it turns out CANADA is actually a different country from both the US and Great Britain, and suffrage-march crowd deaths are actually really implausible on PEI at this time! OH, CANADA, why must you thwart me by being. . . comparatively. . .safe. . .looks like I'll have to re-do these chapters a bit, eh?
