The Hunger Games

I got The Hunger Games from the library yesterday, so that I could start reading it in the evening and have something to anticipate at work today. It's pretty good so far! The worldbuilding feels a little shaky (how big is District 12? How big is Panem? Why are the Games being presented explicitly as punishment and not as an exciting opportunity for community and personal betterment?) but that's probably a function of the narration style; I would be happy to take everything shown me for granted if it weren't being explained in frank YA first-person at the same time.

We'll see! I think I'll end up enjoying it even if some things are still a little vague.

Do you want me to tell some background about where and when this is supposed to be set? They sort of explain but not exactly.  The books are very absorbing,  I read the second one very quickly.

I'll wait until I've read to the end of the series, and then you can explain everything I've failed to get! I'd like to see how the worldbuilding sorts itself out for me as a first-time reader.

I managed to get all the way to Part II: The Games just reading on my lunch break today, so.

Yeah, I do think the first-person POV ended up limiting the story as it went along. I'm glad you're enjoying, though!

It's definitely a page-turner. I keep swinging wildly back and forth between total engagement and "hey wait how is this economy supposed to work" and then back to worried suspense. . .

I'll probably have more to say about the POV on Wednesday. I'm not totally sure what I think of it yet.

Enjoy! I read the lot - three books - in three days on my summer break. This series is going to be a classic. I say this as someone who reads a LOT of YA fiction as part of my job. Kids will be reading it many years from now. When you've finished the books, get hold of the movies. They respect the spirit of the books.

I'm pretty sure I will! It's not quite what I expected, but perfect for reading on my lunch break.

Oh man! You're so fast. I haven't even gotten the book from the library yet!

I'm saving it for lunch breaks at work, which means I won't pick it up again until Monday. You still have plenty of time! My local library had about eight copies; I don't think it will be hard to find.

HOW DO YOU LIKE IT SO FAR

IT'S KIND OF AMAZING. WHY DID I PUT THIS OFF FOR SO LONG?

I just got to the part where Katniss is showing off her archery skillz to the judges. The whole parade, though! Their costumes ON FIRE. And the way that it's all so glittery and oddly joyful and totally horrifying, and the tributes are all treated like commodities - the stylists just stripping Katniss and completely remaking her so she'll catch everyone's eye in the Capitol.

I love that stylist who is SO AESTHETICALLY INSPIRED by District 12 as fuel for the consumption of a nation (or the torch of a safely historical revolution) and how he tries really hard to be nice to Katniss and mostly SUCCEEDS and how he's probably genuinely a little unhappy about all the ritual child murder but also genuinely excited to have a national showcase for his masterpiece.

CINNA IS THE BEST.

Also I love all the scenes where Katniss is eating stuff and it's the best food she's ever had and she's just so blown away and simultaneously cranky about the existence of all this ludicrous luxury.
