GUESS WHO'S BACK

BACK AGAIN

HANG ON TO YOUR CRUMPETS

THE MOST COMFORTABLE MAN IN LONDON IS BACK

TELL A FRIEND

I got tired of waiting for The Fleet Street Murders to arrive and strongly suspect it may have been lost in the mail, so I took a chance on the local public library, which is famous in my heart for never having what I want, but always having 10 copies of 50 Shades of Grey in a bright, clean row. This time, I was lucky: The Fleet Street Murders was right where it was supposed to be, along with a couple of other books in the same series. I'm saving it for after I get my Yuletide comments together (I have an embarrassment of riches this Yuletide and it's throwing me off even more than usual) but the dust-jacket copy indicates that it will not disappoint. Lenox is celebrating Christmas with his friends -- until MURDER spoils the party! He's about to run for Parliament, just like a Victorian Leslie Knope! His engagement may be imperiled by new information?? We can't let that happen! (They're so comfortable together!)

I'm also delighted to learn that the public library's icon for "Mystery" is an earnest-looking cartoon man with a giant moustache, smoking a pipe the size of his own head:

the essence of mystery

In my mind, this is Hastings' Sherlock Holmes costume, in which he is well pleased. I kind of want to nominate it for Yuletide, though that may be stretching the spirit of Yuletide a little too far.

Yuletide post coming soon!

Hastings ABSOLUTELY owns that Sherlock Holmes costume! Probably he tried to wear it on a case some time, and Poirot was so displeased that Hastings never brought it out again...but he keeps it and tries it on occasionally and dreams about the day that there will be a mystery at a fancy dress ball where he just happens to be wearing that costume.

omg that is the best sticker! Awwwwww.

I am lucky that I live in a city with a great public library system - I very very rarely buy books (they're heavy and take up space and I've moved a lot). My favourite library branch is about 30mins walk away - it has a special non-circ speculative fiction collection (sf/f, alt history, etc) which is amazingggg and I think its presence contributes to the really great circulating sf/f section in the main library. The library system where my parents live is kinda sad; there are lots of copies of one book which is fairly useless; I would far rather wait on hold than not have a book. Argh.

I loved it so much I made an icon.

Your library sounds great! I really should try to use the public library more, but it has some discouraging features. There's a university library that is not bad, but I get lazy about using it too because I have to get someone else to check books out for me. This isn't difficult at all; it just feels like a hassle and I love my instant gratification.

I'm sure the librarians are making their book-purchasing choices based on sound information of some kind; I'd rather wait, too, but. . .

*gesture indicating resigned ignorance of the mysteries of librarianship*
