The Water Damage Club

I brought home a small box of books today from the bookstore. The local artist's guild had "borrowed" them to use in their window display and of course they got rained on. Some were still in good enough shape to go back on the shelf, but most of them were too damaged to sell. The owner asked me to take them to the recycling center, but I took them home instead. "Better books than cats," has become my less-than-totally-reassuring motto.

Anyway, I haven't read any of them before, so I might as well throw them on the TBR list and see if this incident turns out to be the serindipitous water damage of discovery, or the un-serendipitous water damage of wasting my time.

Any thoughts on what I should read first?

I think the only one where I even have heard of the author is Anita Shreve... but "Samuel Johnson Is Indignant" is definitely a leading title. If/when you do read it, I want to know what exactly Dr Johnson is being indignant about. :-)

Lydia Davis is an author of extremely short stories whose work many people I know love, but has left me cold in the past. I haven't read Samuel Johnson is Indignant, but past experience suggests that it will probably not contain much Samuel Johnson and may not even explain why he is indignant. But we'll see!

I know nothing about Anita Shreve, on the other hand.

lost_spook, I accidentally deleted your comment on Ngaio Marsh; this is not because there was anything wrong with it, but because I misunderstood the inbox buttons. I am reading Artists in Crime right now!
