Chapter 73: Duly Noted

"If the prize were for mathematics Kath Darcy should win it."

Mathematics doesn't come into the Emily books at all, except in the person of Kathleen "Kath" Darcy, about whom we will come to know only two things: She has an uncle who is a professor at McGill, which uncle gets it into his head to offer a poetry prize to Shrewsbury students (said prize being a complete set of Parkman) thereby paving the way for Evelyn's final comeuppance and the resolution of the Great Moustache Debacle of '02, and if there were a prize for mathematics, Kath would win it.

My complete ignorance of the state of mathematics (as taught in schools or otherwise) in the early 20th century led me to this useful document, as well as to the conclusion that I should probably avoid this research rabbit hole altogether for the time being.

Anyway, there is Chapter 73, which is a very short chapter, and Kath is in it.

ETA: Agnes Scott College has this index, available in helpful chronological order, of lady mathematicians of the past and present, including Dalhousie's own Agnes Baxter.
