Wednesday Minimalist Reading Meme

It's a pretty bare-bones Wednesday Reading Meme today, since I've been busy (or maybe I've just felt busy).

What I've Just Finished Reading

AGATHA CHRISTIE, you guys. She wins The Kazuo Ishiguro Last-Minute Dropkick Trophy for making me ABSOLUTELY HATE the plot of The ABC Murders right up until the second it was revealed to be about something completely different. I should have known there was something up her sleeve. Also, HASTINGS IS IN THIS BOOK, though I'm not sure that the full mystery of Hastings has yet been revealed to me? He's the Watson of the story, but he seems to be a little less active and more oblivious than Watson. I like him, though. His main job seems to be to follow Poirot around and remind him that, even when it provides much-needed exercise for the cells of the brain, murder is actually the worst.

What I'm Reading Now

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. Back to no Hastings. Poirot tries to go on vacation, but GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, BUDDY. MURDER NEVER GOES ON VACATION. The lesson of all murder mysteries seems to be: no matter how much fun it looks at first, never get involved in a murder investigation unless you want to be tripping over corpses for the rest of your life.

Plus: a lot of stuff related to Yuletide, and a little of this biography of Thomas More (brought to you by watching a season of The Tudors). Thomas More is a very irritating person for the most part, but I am ridiculously happy to see Wolsey alive again. The Tudors fails to accurately represent the depth and breadth of Tudor-era misogyny, but then again, an accurate representation of Tudor-era misogyny might be completely unwatchable.

What I Plan to Read Next

Who knows; maybe something with no murders in it? (maybe not). I have an exciting-looking sci-fi book that I am about to wrap up for my brother's birthday, but maybe I'll read it first. I have lots of reading to catch up on, but I've put most of it on the shelf because I'm trying to procrastinate less on Yuletide this year.

I don't think there is a big mystery to Hastings, except maybe how the TV show took a character who is pretty much a complete duffer and made me love him. He has no secret angsty past or anything.

Should I watch this TV show? I already kind of like Hastings' duffery ways, so if the TV show made you love him, it will probably work on me, too.

I really enjoyed the TV show. All the episodes are self-contained and almost all of them are good, so it's a great show to have around for a rainy day.

At least, theoretically. I watched the whole thing pretty quickly because I enjoyed it so much that I just couldn't save it.

Is this the show you mean, or is there another one?

That one, with David Suchet! I'm pretty sure he was born to play Poirot.

I will definitely check it out sometime soon.
